September 11, 2001

I know we are suppose to stop and remember September 11, 2001.  However, I don't.  I just don't want to be reminded of what brought about that tragedy day.  I don't want to think about the lives that were lost.  The planes flying into the buildings. The people jumping to their deaths.  This day is so sad and on the other had to full of promise.  Why does it take a situation like death to honor America workers.  Why did they dislike America so much that they would take three thousand lives and their own in the process? 

 

After being born and raised in America I can understand the reasons another Country would want to do harm to America.  We aide and supply money, food, and weapons to other Nations.  In return we want to dictate to them what democracy should be.  What?  We don't have democracy in America and yet we use out money and weapons to influence other nations.  When all this stuff is put in the mix of politics you get a September 11, 2001. 

 

I must hand it to the terrorist, they really did a number on America.  After September 11, 2001 everything changed.  Even to the point you take off your shoes before you board a plane.  Your phone calls are listened in on, you can get on a no fly list and not even know it.  I feel for all those effected by the events of September 11, 2001.  However it is September 11, 2013 it is time we move on.  No more ringing the bells, no more moment of silence, no more reading of three thousand names, and no more Presidential speeches on the subject. 

Where have I been?

Norwood's favorite IN(dependent) has been slacking in her duties to keep you informed on what is happening in Norwood.  My last post was approximately one month ago.  That is better than last time when I didn't post for months.  Let me assure you a lot has happened since my last post.  The city fire department received a grant to hire more firemen.  Let's hope the Chief of the Norwood fire department think about hiring a woman and for goodness sake hire a black person.  Crime is rampage in Norwood.  The first week in September there was three robberies in one night.  School has started back.  The urology center had a successful ZERO Prostate Cancer Run.  City Council have all but scrapped the plans to raise the landlords certification fees.  The City's C 9 Trust fund is in jeopardy of being eliminated all together.  The city is still viberent and alive. 

 

I miss posting on Norwood News and Views.  I kinda feel like a employee that does not show up for work.  Is that considered a no call no show?  Am I not being a good team player?  Does someone not get information because I don't show up(I don't think so)?  Will someone else try to replace me?  Is there more I can do to better myself?  Should I take a writers course?  Should I just wing it?  Whatever comes of me, I will do better.  I will give it the good oh girl folks are depending on you try. 

 

The first thing I'm trying to do is change the lay-out.  Wish me luck.

Chris: Norwood is With You

Chris Frank we hope you get better.  Chris is the young man that was hit by a driver that simply took off.  Chris was leaving a bachelor party at approximately 2a.m. on Saturday night.   He was hit by a driver of a white car possibly a taxi cab.  He is in serious condition.  The accident happened on Ida Avenue in Norwoood. 

 

If anyone knows something about the car or the driver please call the Norwood Police @ 458-4521.

 

This case is a reason to warn people that life is fragile.  Handle it with care.

No Real Winners

Okay, the Norwood Health Levy didn't pass.  Am I feeling like a winner?  Not at all.  I worry about the health of the City.  Its' as if it is on life support.  There is no money in this City.  It is true the City is broke and the Health Department is a casualty of mismanagement of the funds.  Why did the City Council let this happen?  I'm not blaming City Council all by itself, however, they ran for office to do right by the residents, and homeowners of Norwood.  They failed you.  It is just that plain and simple.  They had knowledge of what condition the city was in ten years ago, five years ago.  Yet no one blew the whistle to the residents.  I look back on Council Meetings and not one member said, " we need to let the folks in on how bad our problems really are". 

 

The City Council Members act as if they can not challenge the Mayor to the decisions he is making.  Look at their votes, they all vote the same on every single issue.  I attend some of the meetings and I can tell you I witness this all the time.  Only once did I ever see one member vote different.  That was Mr. Tom Whittington on the matter of the City of Norwood refusing to refund the over payment on years of  trash fee.  Mr. Whittington voted No on accepting the decision to keep it in the courts.  That was the one time a council member voted different then the others.  Just one and only time.  I just don't understand why they feel the need to vote all the same all the time.

 

I have written in the past that I think the Mayor tells them how to vote.  Why else would they all let this City get in the mess we are in?  Surly, someone could have spoke up at some point.  Some one could have said, "What about our Health Department not being funded"?  Not one member ever did.  Not one member spoke to the dire straights this Department was in?  Folks this is what happens when you get too comfortable with your seat.  You start to not care and not ask the tough questions.  You take the residents and homeowners for granted.  You start to slack on your responsibility to serve the residents and voters. 

 

That is why we voted No, this City Council serves us!  I have watched  years and years the Mayor have his way with them.  Council act as if the Mayor has instilled fear in them. Council does not question the Mayor, they don't ask him to explain his decisions, nor do they present questions that residents and voters want to ask. Weather the question is good or bad. The Mayor is not the beginning or the end.  It is the City Council that is suppose to prepare themselves with information.  This information should then be brought to the floor and discussed openly among the Council Members.  Everyones input into the matter should be heard.  Council meetings are the place to agree to disagree.  Question decisions, talk about levies, discuss money problems, discuss landlord contracts, discuss big business contracts.  The only thing I have ever seen is all the members voting yes on issues.  And if they are not voting yes all together they are voting on emergency ordinances.  Which no one can begin to understand.  Fact is Council don't care that you don't understand.  They don't care to stop and try to explain little bits of facts about the decisions they make. 

 

That is why so many people in Norwood are turned off to their decisions.  The Mayor and City Council keep acting as if they can keep doing business as usual and we are going to keep taking it.  Not under my watch.  I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, however, I think the residents and homeowners deserve more from Norwood City Council.  And if they are not given more, I will be there to inform as many residents and homeowners to just vote No! 

Norwood woman Overcharged On Trash Bill, City Shrugs

Imagine discovering you have mistakenly been overcharged for a service for years.

So you turn to the city or utility and ask for a refund.
Sounds simple, right? It's not. And theres a lesson here for everyone.

Paid, And Paid, And Paid Some More

Jayme Ritter puts her trash cans outside her Norwood home weekly and pays her trash pickup bill every quarter.

But it turns out she was too good about doing it.

The homeowner recently learned she has overpaid her trash bill for almost a decade.

"According to Public Works," Ritter said, "we've overpaid by $2,185 over the course of eight years."

It turns out she was paying the rate for a three-family home, which it had been many years ago.
"The previous owners had changed it from a three-family home to single family home," Ritter said. "However, the building department and Public Works never changed it."

Ritter expected the city to refund her money. Instead, it offered her just half of her $2,000 overpayment, she said.
And to make matters worse, the city would not issue her a check. The officials wanted to give her the money over six years, in the form of monthly credits, she said.

No Money To Help

Why not the full amount? One Norwood City Councilman told me he sympathizes, and would like to help, but the money's just not there.

Councilman Tom Whittington said, "the city has financial problems, and they are trying to work through that."

So Ritter took the city to small claims court, where she says she was rejected on a technicality, and now has to file again.

So, we went to the top, making a visit to Norwood's mayor and safety director to try to get some answers. But that too, resulted in a dead end.

"It's still in court," said Safety Service Director Joe Geers. "She lost in court, and there's an appeal process. And per our legal people we can't comment."

So a simple trash bill overpayment is now locked up in legal limbo. Ritter said she just wishes she had taken a closer look at that bill years ago.

Lesson For Homeowners

There's a lesson here for everyone: Check your bills.

Whether it's a trash bill, water bill, phone or cable bill, look at it every time it arrives.

If it seems unusually high, pick up the phone and ask about it so you don't waste your money.

Fire In Vacant House

NORWOOD, OH (FOX19)- Fire crews are investigating the cause of a fire at a vacant Norwood home.
The fire broke out around 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning in the 5200 block of Globe Avenue.
Crews say the fire started in an upstairs room of the house. Fire damage was limited to that room. However, smoke and water damage was extensive throughout the home.
The house is believed to be in foreclosure.
Neighbors say they saw someone working on the house earlier in the week.
No injuries were reported in the incident. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
